The Weight of the Nation: Understanding Obesity in the Philippines

Obesity is becoming more common among Filipinos, making it a rising public health concern in the country. According to the 2025 Department of Science and Technology–Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) survey, 44.5% of Filipino adults aged 29 to 59 are considered obese, a noticeable rise from 39.8% in 2023. The survey also shows that obesity is more common among women and urban dwellers in the country.

According to the National Nutrition Council (NNC), many Filipinos do not regard obesity as a disease but rather as an appearance flaw and a lack of self-discipline. In reality, obesity is a chronic condition that can increase the risk of serious health problems.

What is Obesity?

The Cleveland Clinic defines obesity as having abnormal or excessive body fat, with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or above. To calculate BMI, multiply your weight in pounds by 703. Then divide the answer by your height in inches. Lastly, divide the answer by your height in inches.

For example, a person who weighs 170 lbs and is 5 feet and 3 inches tall (65 inches) would calculate their BMI as:

170 x 703 = 119,510

119,510 / 65 = 1,838.62

1,838.62 / 65 = 28.29

The person’s BMI would be 28.29 (overweight).

BMI Categories for adults aged 20 and older:

  • < 18.5 – Underweight
  • 18.5 to 24.9 – Healthy Weight
  • 25 to 29.9 – Overweight
  • 30 – 34.9 – Class I Obesity
  • 35 – 39.9 – Class II Obesity
  • > 40 – Class III Obesity (Severe Obesity)

What Are the Causes of Obesity in the Philippines?

One of the leading contributors to obesity is overeating or consuming more calories than your body needs. In the Philippines, the growing popularity of fast-food chains, food delivery services, and eat-all-you-can restaurants has led to weight gain and increased risk of obesity.

Many Filipinos choose ready-to-eat meals, junk food, and sugary drinks over balanced, home-cooked dishes because of busy work schedules and lifestyles. Combined with rising prices of basic commodities, many people resort to instant food and canned goods. Research also shows that unhealthy food choices are fueled by rampant marketing. Over time, unhealthy food choices plus lack of physical activity add up to a highly obesity-promoting environment.

Certain medications and underlying health issues can also contribute to weight gain. Other factors to consider are genetics, stress, and lack of sleep.

What Are the Health Risks of Obesity?

Obesity can cause metabolic changes that can increase the risk of non-communicable diseases such as:

  • Cardiovascular diseases – Including congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease, stroke, and heart attack
  • Fatty liver disease
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Gallstones
  • High blood pressure
  • Kidney disease

Excessive weight can also strain your bones, muscles, and joints, contributing to the following conditions:

  • Back pain
  • Asthma
  • Arthritis
  • Sleep Apnea

Obesity is also linked to:

  • Depression
  • Mood disorders
  • Memory and cognitive issues
  • Certain cancers, such as breast, uterine, colorectal, ovarian, and pancreatic

How To Treat Obesity?

Treatment of obesity involves major lifestyle modification and behavioral changes, making it a challenging journey.

Your doctor can create a weight loss plan tailored to your health needs and goals. This may include a personalized nutrition plan and recommended physical activities to help you burn off calories. Counseling may also be provided to help manage stress and address emotional and psychological concerns.

Your doctor may also suggest weight loss medications, such as appetite suppressants. For Class III or severe obesity, weight loss surgery may be an option.

How To Prevent Obesity?

Being mindful of your habits and making reasonable lifestyle and behavior changes can help you prevent obesity. The NNC shares the following practical tips to guide you in achieving and maintaining a healthy weight.

  • Maintain a healthy diet – A healthy diet provides you with the needed nutrients to boost your energy, enabling you to perform daily tasks and promote healthy bodily functions. Fill your plate with vegetables, fruits (excluding starchy roots), healthy protein, healthy fats, whole grains, and dairy without added sugars.
  • Keep an active lifestyle – Staying active by doing 30 to 60 minutes of moderate-intensity activities can help you maintain a normal BMI. Don’t forget to stay hydrated every 15 to 20 minutes of exercise.
  • Monitor your weight – Weigh yourself at least once a week to check whether your diet and exercise are working. If your weight remains the same or increases, you can adjust your weight loss strategies accordingly.
  • Get an annual physical examination (APE) – When it comes to health and fitness, having the best HMO in the Philippines gives you access to a network of affiliated doctors, accredited hospitals, and accredited clinics. You can get regular check-ups, routine lab tests, and annual physical examinations that can enable early intervention by tracking your Body Mass Index (BMI).
  • Stay consistentMaintaining weight loss requires consistency. Eating healthy and staying active help you lose excess pounds, but maintaining these habits is the key to keeping the weight off.

Bottomline

Many Filipinos still view obesity as an appearance flaw, but it is actually a chronic condition that can lead to serious health issues, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, stroke, and certain types of cancer.

While obesity can be treated, it can be a challenging journey. Maintaining a healthy diet, staying active, monitoring weight, getting an APE, and staying consistent are some of the best ways to prevent obesity.
